US clients

Why will US clients give you work?

When I propose to you that as an Indian accountant or bookkeeper there’s a huge opening for you to work for US clients, I know that your next question is going to be won’t they hire locally?

Well, of course, they can hire locally. But you have an advantage.

1. The High Cost of Hiring Accountant and Bookkeeper in the US

Hiring accountants and bookkeepers in the US is expensive. Here’s how much accountants and bookkeepers charge in New York, for example:

  • Average salaries in New York are very high, with accountants earning significant sums. However, it’s important to compare this with the salary structure in India.

2. Comparing Salaries: US vs India

  • An Indian accountant (without a CPA qualification) can earn around INR 65 lakhs annually if they were to work in the US, which is almost 33x more than what an Indian accountant makes.
  • Even for a fully qualified Chartered Accountant (CA) in India, the difference in salary is stark: 10x less than what accountants are paid in the US.

3. The Shortage of Accountants in the US

There’s also a shortfall of accountants in the US, which makes it even more attractive for US clients, including small and medium enterprises (SMEs), startups, and even CPAs to hire Indian accounting and bookkeeping professionals remotely.

This is why it is an ideal opportunity for Indian professionals to tap into the US market.

4. How Much Can You Earn?

Assume you charge $10 per hour of work, which is a conservative estimate. Here’s what you could earn:

  • If you work for 200 hours at $10 per hour, you will earn $2000 per month, which is about INR 1.65 lakhs.
  • Even if you work just 3 hours a day at $20 per hour for 20 days, you can earn around INR 100,000 per month!

5. Realistic Earning Potential for Indian Accountants and Bookkeepers

Here are some more realistic rates you could charge:

  • While $10/hour is quite cheap, an average Indian freelancer typically charges $25 per hour for work. Depending on your expertise, rates can even go up to $50 per hour for more complex tasks.

6. Success Stories: Indian Accountants Earning from US Clients

Here are some Indian finance and bookkeeping professionals who are already earning significantly by working with US clients remotely:

  • Majhar Awedin, a B.Com graduate and a qualified CA, has earned over $4000 through Upwork with clients in the US, Australia, and Norway. He has nearly 13 years of experience in finance and taxation, including working at PwC and other MNCs.
  • Gopal Dutta, a qualified CS from India, secured 37 jobs through Upwork after joining the course, earning $5000 with clients from the USA and Netherlands.

7. How to Scale Your Earnings and Grow Your Remote Accounting Business

If you are already earning around INR 1-1.5 lakhs per month, but feel like your income has plateaued, consider the potential to scale:

  • With the right strategy, you can aim to earn $8000 per month and expand your business into a 1 crore INR/year agency.
