What an Enrolled Agent actually is, and why the IRS's highest credential needs no US degree and no CPA

Why America is short some 300,000 accountants, and why US firms are hiring Indian professionals remotely

Are you eligible? What it means for a CA, a CA dropout, a B.Com graduate after a career break, or a 12th-pass

The exam, paper by paper: three MCQ papers, no negative marking, and how to plan the ~200 hours alongside your job

Which US tax forms you must master first to get hired or land clients quickly

What EA work pays, in Indian firms and KPOs, and for US clients directly

Salary hike or second income: the two doors the same licence opens, and which one fits you

Already in practice? How to add a dollar-earning US tax desk to your Indian CA practice

Not ready for an exam? The no-licence path: US bookkeeping on QuickBooks and Xero, and why ~80% of your Tally skills transfer

How to work for US clients without a night shift: the time-zone overlap that works in your favour

How to land your first US client without US work experience: which clients to approach and how to build trust

Live Q&A on your own case: your background, your eligibility, your plan

…and much more

Why this window exists

America is running short of exactly the people this licence creates. India already does a large share of the world's accounting work.

~300,000accountants the US is short of, with entry-level roles starting around $50,000
~65,000Enrolled Agents in the whole US, fewer than CPAs, for ~5 million new businesses a year
75%of US CPAs at or near retirement; CPA exam candidates fell 33% between 2016 and 2021
2 in 3EA candidates pass. Three MCQ papers, no negative marking, ~200 hours of prep

SOURCES: US IRS (SPECIAL ENROLLMENT EXAMINATION) · US MARKET DATA TAUGHT IN THE BOOTCAMP

  • The CPA route demands 150 college credit-hours and years of study, so the replacement pipeline is thin, and US firms are looking offshore.
  • The US registers about 5 million new business applications a year (India, for comparison: about 1.57 lakh). Every one of them needs books and tax returns.
  • Indian professionals already do a large share of the world's accounting work through KPOs and global firms, so the infrastructure for working US books from India is mature.
  • Tax season is a demand event: millions of US businesses and e-commerce stores need tax-ready books and filed returns on a deadline, every single year.

A licence with no degree barrier, in a market that cannot staff itself. That combination is the opportunity.

Not a certificate. A licence, with rights attached.

An Enrolled Agent can prepare and file US federal tax returns and represent taxpayers before the IRS, with unlimited practice rights, the same as attorneys and CPAs. You can do this work for clients anywhere in the world while living in India.

It is the IRS's own credential, and the only one of its kind with no degree requirement at all. Your Indian qualifications are not a handicap here.

That is what changes your bracket: representation-level work, audits included, bills differently from routine accounting.

Why have you never heard of it? US college education is a roughly $20 billion industry. A federal licence a high-school graduate can earn was never going to be advertised by universities selling four-year accounting degrees.

The exam, honestly

It is called the Special Enrollment Examination: three papers (Individuals · Businesses · Representation & Procedures), 100 multiple-choice questions each, 3.5 hours per paper.

Multiple choice only, no negative marking, and roughly 2 of every 3 candidates pass. About 200 hours of preparation, which is roughly 1.5 hours a day for six months, alongside your job or practice.

Eligibility is the remarkable part: no US degree, no CPA prerequisite, and you sit the exam from India. The floor is so low that even a 12th-pass qualifies. If you believed an American credential wall stood between you and international work, this is the gap in the wall.

Fees, scheduling windows and test locations are revised by the IRS and its test partners from time to time, so we walk through the current numbers live and you plan on today's rules, not an outdated blog post.

One licence. Four ways in.

Wherever you are in your accounting career, the route is the same exam. What changes is what you do with it.

Accountants & commerce graduates

Learn US accounting, get licensed to file US taxes, earn in dollars from home. Three steps, no career restart.

Finance professionals whose income has stalled

The ceiling is the Indian market, not you. Same skills, opposite market: on the US side, supply is the constraint.

Practicing CAs

Not a career change, a service-line expansion. Add US federal returns to your practice: dollar revenue, same office.

B.Com / M.Com graduates, including after a break

Your degree has not expired. Debits and credits did not change while you were away. Remote work, on your hours.

  • You want international work and income without leaving India, as a job or freelance.
  • You assumed a foreign credential wall stood in the way, and want that assumption tested.
  • You would rather learn the route from people already doing US work than piece it together alone.

You do not need a CA, a CPA, or even a completed degree to begin.

What EA work can be worth

Read this the way an accountant should: disclosed market ranges, not promises.

₹10 lakh to ₹15 lakh a yearTypical starting range for Enrolled Agents in India, at finance and tax KPOs and global firms.
₹1 lakh to ₹2 lakh a monthThe band experienced EAs command in India, with senior practitioners going beyond it.
$90,000–$180,000What Enrolled Agents earn in the US itself: CPA-level money, without the CPA's degree wall.

Individual results vary with your background, effort and the clients you land. These are market ranges, not a projection of what you will earn, and nobody can promise you income.

Not sure about an exam? There is a no-licence path too

Most US accounting work needs no licence at all: bookkeeping for US small businesses and e-commerce stores, reconciliation, monthly close, tax-ready books.

The tools, QuickBooks and Xero, are genuinely easier than Tally. If you already work in Tally, roughly 80% of the work transfers. The bootcamp covers both routes, so you choose with the full picture.

No night shift required

The India–US time difference is the product, not the problem. US clients assign work in their evening; you deliver by their morning.

The overlap windows fall in the early morning or late evening IST, your choice. Remote by design: your city, your home, your hours, alongside a job or a practice.

10 things to know before everyone else finds out

Every item is from the bootcamp's own teaching: IRS mechanics or market data. Two minutes to read; worth forwarding.

You cannot be too unqualified for this.

The EA licence has no degree requirement. A 12th-pass in any stream can sit the exam. No CA, no CPA, no B.Com.

It is a licence, not a certificate.

An EA can file US federal returns and represent taxpayers before the IRS, from India, for clients anywhere.

Two of every three candidates pass.

Three multiple-choice papers, no negative marking, about 200 hours of preparation in total.

Only ~65,000 EAs exist in the US.

Fewer than CPAs, in an economy registering about 5 million new businesses a year.

America is short ~300,000 accountants.

Entry-level roles start around $50,000, and the shortage is worsening, not easing.

The CPA pipeline is collapsing.

Around 75% of US CPAs are at or near retirement, and CPA exam candidates fell 33% between 2016 and 2021.

No night shift required.

Work assigned in the US evening is done by their morning.

Most of the work needs no licence at all.

US bookkeeping, monthly close, reconciliations and tax-ready books are open to anyone who learns the tools.

If you know Tally, you are closer than you think.

Roughly 80% of the work transfers; Xero and QuickBooks are genuinely easier to learn.

Tax season is a demand event.

Millions of US businesses and e-commerce stores need clean, tax-ready books on a deadline, every single year.

Questions

I only have a 12th-pass / incomplete degree. Am I really eligible?

For the EA exam itself, yes. Eligibility is clearing the Special Enrollment Examination, not holding a degree. The session covers exactly how registration works.

I dropped out of CA. Does that count against me?

No. The EA route does not know or care about Indian credential history, and much of your CA preparation transfers directly to the tax papers.

How is this different from doing a CPA?

The CPA requires 150 college credit-hours and a far longer runway. The EA is a focused tax licence: three MCQ papers, around 200 hours of preparation, no degree requirement, with its own distinct rights before the IRS.

What does the exam cost and where do I take it?

Fees, windows and locations are set by the IRS and its test partners and get revised. We walk through the current numbers live in the session so you are planning on today's rules.

Do I have to work US night hours?

No. Work assigned in the US evening is delivered by their morning. The overlap windows fall in the early morning or late evening IST, and you choose.

Will this guarantee me a job or income?

No, and be wary of anyone who says otherwise. The session teaches a route that is real and current; what you earn depends on your work. Registration is free, so verify everything yourself in the room.

Is there any cost?

No. Registration is free and there is nothing to pay to attend.

Is it recorded?

No, it runs live only, so questions get answered in the room. Come live.

I am a practicing CA. Why would I need this?

Your CA lets you serve Indian clients. The EA lets you prepare US federal returns and represent US taxpayers before the IRS, so it adds a dollar-earning service line that runs alongside your practice.
