Grant writing as a freelance career means being paid to write funding applications for the nonprofits, universities, hospitals and research groups that need money from foundations and government agencies. US rates run from roughly 40 to 150 dollars an hour, 1,000 to 8,000 dollars as a flat fee per proposal, or 2,000 to 6,000 dollars a month on retainer. The client base is around 1.9 million registered US nonprofits, most of them far too small to keep a grant writer on payroll. Two things are pulling against each other in this market right now. Cheap AI drafting has pushed application volumes up, and funders have started writing rules against it: the National Institutes of Health will no longer treat applications substantially developed by AI as the applicant’s original ideas, and it now caps most principal investigators at six applications a calendar year. That’s unusually good news for a writer who can show their working, because the scarce thing has moved from the drafting to the accountability.<\/p>\n
